Diabetes MineSteel Magnolias: The film continues to hit a diabetes 30 years later, fast, name the movie... "Drink your juice, Shelby!" and "Don't talk about me as if you weren't here!" Those two lines are probably what burns in the brain of someone with diabetes who saw... You guessed it! (if I read the post title)... the film Steel Magnolias. It's the 1989 film in which Julia Roberts interprets Shelby, a young woman with type 1 diabetes, who is dealing with family tensions along with complications in the south of the United States. There is the famous scene in the beauty parlor, where Shelby has a low blood sugar while getting her hair adorned before her wedding. The sweat beads appear in her mouth and eyebrow, and she is shaking and being held while fighting for the cup of orange juice that her mother — touched by Sally Field — is trying to force her throat. And then there is everything that happens in this film that has influenced a generation of women—and some of us—on the subject of diabetes in a non-positive way. Shelby wants to have kids, and she fights with a diabetic pregnancy. Although it may have been "technically" accurate for some circumstances, many PWD (people with diabetes) see the approach of the film as too dramatic and focusing too much on the worst scenario instead of what to live with diabetes is actually like in contemporary times. Surprisingly, 2019 of the release of Steel Magnolias, and to honor that milestone that is being released in theaters all over the country this weekend, with special ideas and comments from Turner Classic Movies. And ICYMI for several years: the Lifetime TV network made its own remake of the film in 2012 with an all-black plaster and some minor modern reviews, but the history and impact of diabetes remained the same. Reaction to How Diabetes is Steel Magnolias We've heard many in the diabetes community say they refuse to see the movie so they've heard about how diabetes is handled. Others have torn him apart as "Hollywood fiction." Personally, although I can't talk much about the child-raising aspect, I find the scene of the very potent juice room. The truth is said: I drown a little and emotional every time I see that scene, because that's exactly how I acted and felt during the bass. You may not agree, but that scene hits me home. So it is a type 1 POV in the original steel magnolias, which obviously is not the same as the female perspective. Our own offered some ideas of their end, such as a woman with T1D: "I know that Steel Magnolias brings many different opinions and feelings in many PWDs, especially among us, ladies. It actually came out the year I was born, so I never saw the movie as a child," he says, pointing out that he didn't see it until after his diagnosis with type 1 diabetes at 22 years after the seing blog published about the movie and its diabetes story. "I mentioned to my best friend that I was going to see him and she strongly recommended that I should not. But... of course I do. Rachel says the "bib your juice" scene didn't affect her much, but other parts of the movie did. "The part where Shelby's mother tells the ladies that the doctor said Shelby shouldn't have children—not that I can't—it got me a little, but not on the side of family planning. He just made some comments from older family members shortly after I was diagnosed they made a lot more sense. I was actually diagnosed with diabetes because of a pregnancy test, which was negative. "The part of the movement that really hit home with me was the dialysis and comments on Shelby's peaks that pulled out her arms. All that came to me when I had to go see a nephrologist because of the protein in my urine and I really freaked out. " The reality is that Steel Magnolias takes a time when managing diabetes was very different from today, a time before continuous glucose monitors (CGM) existed and even insulin pumps were actually conventional, before the A1C test was established as a "golden standard" for D-management and before introducing insulin and analogues of action faster. Today's reality is gratefully different, even though there are economic and cultural gaps that prevent some PWDs from being treated ideally. That's why I'm not particularly excited that Steel Magnolias is being played for his 30th anniversary. And that doesn't even take into account the reboot done several years ago. Dissecting the "Steel Magnolias" Remake for Lifetime TV The remake 2012 of the film was mainly kept in the original script: It is basically a movie about female friendships, and emotional crux here is the fact that Shelby is fighting chronic kidney disease caused by her diabetes, which complicates family planning. This modern television adaptation of the film is complete with cell phones, iPads and references Beyonce and Facebook. And the big change: . It was directed by Kenny Leon, with Queen Latifah as an executive producer and starred by M'Lynn, the mother originally interpreted by Sally Field. Shelby was played by , and other cast members include Alfre Woodard, Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, and Adepero Oduye. Diabetes is not the focus of the film, but it is an important point of plot that unites everything and makes the story what it is. With respect to respect D, I actually preferred this modern remake. Why? Because it addressed the deficiencies of the original, spelling out that the problem is not that "diabetics cannot have healthy babies," but that Shelby's chronic kidney disease — presumably diabetes complications nephropathy, although I don't think it has been specifically explained as a complication — was causing pregnancy concern. In this version, the viewers get a look at Shelby checking their blood sugar while sitting in the bathroom, and one of the mother-daughter conversations about pregnancy tells us that Shelby was in control "tight" checking 10 times a day. Shelby also mentions consultation with a dietitian and eye doctor for high-risk pregnancy. The famous "honour scene" in the beauty salon, where Shelby acts dramatically hypo reaction, still exists with the Shelby recast, although we thought Julia Roberts did better in the original than Condola Rashad in this remake. Rashad's demeanor is a problem in general, as it is bouncing around the film that looks healthy and energetic at all times, while everyone is very concerned about its chronic condition. We thought there should be times when at least it seemed a little less than perfect. A tidbit that wasn't in the original was the time of "Oh, shit!" after Shelby's blood sugar starts to climb up and sees the orange juice and the crowd of ladies slashing over it. Instintively, she apologizes and that sense of guilt that the PWDs know all too well is realistically portrayed. There was also an interesting part in which Shelby spoke to her mother, M'Lynn (a very matriarchal queen Latifah) about trying to adopt a child, and how it would be almost impossible to do so once she had to list type 1 diabetes in her medical forms, a problem that is in fact a concern for real-life PWDs who hope to adopt. But apart from that, spectators still don't have a very clear look at what it's really like to live with diabetes. In the film, Shelby's mother weave her eyebrows a lot of concern, but there is never any mention of how difficult it was for her to constantly monitor a type 1 child during all those years. And again, Rashad as Shelby prances through the movie that looks fantastic, and apart from that cameo of tests in the bathroom, there is not a single wink to a syringe or anything else of daily life D. A couple of scenes seem to contradict each other, in fact. It is mentioned that M'Lynn was so worried about her daughter's diabetes that she hesitated to allow Shelby to get a driver's license or go to the camp. But later in the movie, Shelby reminds her mother that she always told her she could do anything she dreamed of... Both of you just don't look like jibe. So, although it's good that there's a modern version of the movie out there, the side of diabetes hasn't really changed. And now 30 years later, we face a new theatrical version of the original that could bring more misconceptions and fear among the general public about diabetes, especially about the chances of healthy pregnancy. Here's the hope that doesn't happen. Read this now.
